August 2013 Newsletter

Dear Friends,

I’m sitting in a café in Boston as I write this, reflecting on quite a whirlwind year. About the same time last summer, I was doing much the same – staring at a laptop screen in a café – and working on the zillions of details related to what would be the release of my debut album un and its subsequent release tours in Finland and on the US East Coast.

But “doing much the same” doesn’t begin to do the past 12 months any justice – so much has happened since then.

It has been quite an experience, to say the least. Not only has the album’s music gotten an overwhelmingly positive reception in the international press – a personal highlight being a glowing review in Guitar Player magazine, the same magazine I used to devour from cover to cover at the Rovaniemi public library in my teens, looking for more pieces to the eternal puzzle that is music – but, most importantly, the reactions of people who have come to our gigs has been something I never could have anticipated in my wildest fantasies. Getting to play for and connect with you all at our shows in Finland and in the US has been a true gift.

All this to say – for all your support, I am thankful beyond words.

As I write this, the band I are preparing to take to the stage again after a summer break; we’ll be doing two dates in Massachusetts in August (Acton Jazz Café in Acton on August 9th and Amazing Things Arts Center in Framingham on August 31st), so if you’re around, mark your calendars, come out and join us! I’m also honored (and somewhat bewildered) to be part of a workshop entitled The Art of the Oud together with Mehmet Ali Sanlikol from Turkey, Mal Barsamian from Armenia/US, and Nima Janmohammadi from Iran on August 11th in Boston.

As far as future plans with JUSSI REIJONEN: UN go, I’m sketching out another tour for the East Coast for October, so please stay tuned for more dates; latest updates will be on both my website and Facebook page.

Meanwhile, if you didn’t already get a copy, un is still available online; you can order your copy from the links on the right. As always, in these social media saturated times, each “Like” on Facebook goes a long way as well – I’m very grateful for each click, which, funny as it is, really helps us to spread the word and get to perform this music in more and more places, which, ultimately, is what this all is about for us.

Hope to see you at one of our fall shows!

P.S. For fans of another kind of world/jazz fusion, check out the amazing Sissy Castrogiovanni‘s new album Intra Lu Munnu, which I was honored to be part of and which was just released. Those of you who came to our shows at Acton Jazz Café and Ryles Jazz Club last spring will recognize Sissy as the guest vocalist we had onstage for “Kaiku”. As an all-in-the-family aside, both Bruno Råberg and Tareq Rantisi from my quartet also play on the album, so check it out!

I’ll be posting more specific information in the coming weeks on where to buy tickets and exact starting times and so forth; meanwhile, please mark your calendars and spread the word. I haven’t played in Finland since 2008 and in my hometown Rovaniemi since 1999, so on a personal level, it means so much to me to get to go back to play this music.

Official Finnish press release regarding the album and tour:

More US dates will be posted soon, so stay tuned.

On another note, please check out the first full track preview of un in the form of the album’s opening track, “Serpentine”:

Hope to see you at our shows!

Finland release date for “un” confirmed for 25 Jan 2013

So… here it is: the freshly finished – mixed, mastered and pressed – firstborn. Just holding the physical copy of un in my hands is nothing short of a bewildering experience for me – how in the world did I get from pretending to be Slash in front of the mirror to… this?

This is a record I’ve been formulating in my mind since at least 2006 (and one could say that in some form or another, for even longer), so you can imagine I’m as anxious as anyone to already have the album out. That being said, although the record is now officially done, it won’t be officially released until early next year. Timing – as I am learning – is crucial when it comes to album releases.

The album’s Finnish release date has now been confirmed to be 25 January 2013, and it will be distributed nationally through Töölön Musiikkitukku, who deal directly with every single record store in Finland, so wherever you are, you can order the album from your local record store. In Helsinki, at least the legendary Digelius Music will carry it, as will Eronen, so please don’t be shy about pestering them in advance already.

As a reminder, the US release of un will be month later, on 26 Feb 2013, and it will be available through CDBaby, iTunes, Amazon and directly through my website.

Regardless, the time between now and the release dates is nothing if not busy. We’re working to generate interest in the press and the public, booking shows, organizing promotional material, rehearsing, and we’ll be doing several preview shows during the fall to warm us up for the release. I’m hoping that we’ll be on the road in Finland in early February – still finalizing details so don’t hold me to that just yet- and continue to play shows on the East Coast in the US starting in March.

The official US release show will be at Boston’s famous Ryles Jazz Club in Cambridge, MA on March 13 2013, and will feature special guests, so be sure to mark your calendars for that.

The first full-track online preview of the album will come in the form of “Serpentine” in mid-November, with more previews – audio and video – to follow. Meanwhile, please spread the word, and enjoy the preview collage I put out not too long ago. For those of you who haven’t yet heard it, here it is again:

un (Album Preview) by JussiReijonen

For those of you in New York City, I’ll be heading down next week to play at the Somethin’ Jazz Club in Manhattan with Gabriela Martina on Wed Oct 10th. Swing by, we hit at 7 pm!

Stay tuned!

US release date for “un” set for February 26, 2013

Dear Friends,

I’m writing this at a(nother) café, in-between rehearsals with the incredible multi-instrumentalist Marty Ehrlich, who is the artist-in-residence at New England Conservatory this and next week. Beautiful sounds and textures happening… it continues to amaze me what kinds of situations my oud and I find each other in.

First off, I want to thank all of you for tuning in to listen to the preview clip I put up of my upcoming album un recently – the positive response has been overwhelming to say the least. Thank you to each and every one of you for the support – I can not begin to say how much it means to me. Words are sometimes so… limited.

Second, I’m very happy to announce the US release date of un has been confirmed for Tuesday, Feb 26 2013.

The official release date in Finland will be confirmed shortly, but it will definitely be before the US release.

Many things are in the works behind the scenes, all of which I can not announce yet, but it looks like the upcoming year will be a very memorable one for sure. I’ve managed to secure a wonderful team of publicists both in the US and in Finland to help promote the record and the gigs my quintet, and I will be playing anywhere people will receive us.

I’m currently in the process of putting together an album release tour of Finland for early 2013 and hope to be able to announce solid dates soon, so stay tuned. If it happens, it would be my first time performing on Finnish soil since 2008, so here’s hoping all the pieces of the puzzle fall in their place.

Meanwhile, my quintet and I will be doing album preview shows on the East Coast in the US during the fall, and are planning to shoot a live video as well, so check the Events tab on my Facebook Fan Page or the Performances tab on my website for gig updates – many more to come soon. Add to that plans to record Gabriela Martina‘s next album in October/November and an assortment of other gigs and sessions and it looks like it’ll be a beautifully music-filled fall season.

So, stay tuned, please keep spreading the word, and – if you’re in Boston and want to come and hear The Music of Marty Ehrlich concert, come by Jordan Hall on Thursday, Sep 13. We hit at 8 pm!

un – Album Preview

Dear Friends,

I’m writing this towards the end of a hot East Coast summer spent largely indoors wrapping up and preparing the release of a project that – depending how one counts – has taken me anywhere between 6 and 12 years to finish. I’m beyond happy, proud, excited and a little nervous to be writing these words in particular, since I can FINALLY announce the release of the first preview of my debut album as a leader, entitled un.
